3 students
have been confirmed dead in a peaceful protest which later turned violent at the
University of Uyo. On Wednesday morning, students of Engineering and Science
Faculties of the varsity embarked on a peaceful over the decision of the school
management that they should pay N200 everyday in order for them to be ferried
from the town campus to the permanent site (Nsukara Offot) via the school bus.
The students who protested said the transport fare has already been included in
their second semester school fees, hence embarked on the protest by closing all
the gates and entrances at the town campus.
www.connoisseurng.com learnt that the
students later went to all the classes to stop on-going lectures. The police
were invited over the school management to quell the protest, but instead they
shot sporadically and unfortunately, 3 students were caught by bullets. They
are dead. One has been identified as Kingsley Udoette a.k.a Kesy, a 200 level student of Zoology
department. The names of the other students who died in the protest were given
as Kingsley and David.
With
the killing of their comrades, the students went on rampage, setting the main
gate and the Vice Chancellor’s office ablaze.
The
corpse of one of the dead student was taken to Government House as the students
continued their protest while policemen ran for their safety.
Students
who were seen running helter scelter were asked to evacuate their property from
the unaffected hostel blocks before 6pm.
The
school management has hence shut down the school with immediate effect. Below

It is very tragic,why didn't our police used water canon or rubber bullet as is the practice in some advance countries. It is high time the Nigeria police learnt the rudiment of tackling civil protest in order to save lives.May the soul of the untimely departed soul find solace in the bosom of our creator. Amen

ReplyDeletethe students embarked on wrong target, I opine that, they should have aimed at those banks operating in the school environment rather than burning useful properties. Now that the school has been closed down, who loses? but if their target was on those banks, believe you me, some people would have been extremely rich and they wouldn't have closed down the school...think of this, cos looting is allowed on protest... ReplyDeleteThis is my alma mata ,the incivility of d police force is the odd item out ,it is normal for students to stage a peacefull protest about issues that affect them ,they may at somepoint b wrong somewhat the carelessness of youth ,very tragic ,may their patrotic souls rest in peace ,may the wish of d students b granted,otherwise their comrades will have died for nothing.
