It is gathered that some fraudsters
who have been using President Muhammadu Buhari's name to defraud people, were
arrested in Akwa Ibom state recently. According to a reports, 16 suspects (10
men and 6 women) were arrested and paraded for defrauding unsuspecting victims
while pretending to be the Nigerian president. The suspected fraudsters who
were caught on June 30,2017, around Atiku Abubakar way in Uyo, Akwa Ibom state,
were said to have formed a fake group known as "Niger Delta Youths, Women
and Security Movement for Buhari”. The suspects were said to have sold several
forms bearing that name to unsuspecting members of the public, claiming they were
hiring people to become law enforcement officers.
The sum of N199,800 and two forms
for 'empowerment and surveillance', were also found on them. The forms were
reportedly being sold for N6,000 and N15,000 respectively. Further
investigations revealed that the group which started the 'hiring process' since
2015, promised applicants that they would be trained by the Nigerian Army and
would be posted to the other armed forces including the Navy, Police and DSS,
adding that they were being recruited to guard the pipelines. The leader of the
group revealed to be one Felix Obonka, a Delta State indigene, was said to have
also told people that they would also own shops at the end of the programme.
DSP Chukwu Ikechukwu, the Akwa Ibom
state police spokesperson, said:
"They
are simply using the name of the President and Commander in-Chief Muhammadu
Buhari GCFR, to scam and defraud innocent members of the public as none of the
members belong to any registered political party. The Akwa Ibom State Police
Command believes in the sanctity of the law, respect for its citizens in
accordance with the tenets of democratic policing. Consequently, the 16
suspects will be arraigned in the court."
